Week 8 Avant Garde

Avant garde is French for 'advance guard' or 'van guard'. this means work of art that is experimental, extreme, really creative/ artistic, unique , new and pushes boundaries of what is acceptable (opposite of natural look) as it is all about expression. Avant garde is known for being stylised, when you break down the make up it can be simple but accessories make them dramatic. When designing an avant garde look you must focus heavy emphasis on features, this can be done by use of additional media (beyond the make up pallet, anything will go)

Characteristics of make up style:
Very artistic and unusual or unique

Dramatic and stylized

Follow a specific theme or meant to evoke a certain image

Often uses bold or unusual make-up colour

May have heavy emphasis on a specific feature, often the eyes

Use of additional mediums beyond the make-up palate, such as gems, feathers, or glitter

May take a significant amount of time to create

Snake demo step by step

Step 1. cleanse tone (toner will remove excess oils from the skin) and moisturise the skin, ensure to blend the moisturiser well on the face and down the neck to get moist clean base. use the technique effleurage to plump the face. As you can see the tutor is stood behind the model, using her elbows to gently sit the client back as this will be more relaxing for them also Tai is using the mirror facing her to see what she is doing.

use Illamasqua radiance veil to prime the whole of the face , this will give a glossy texture similar to a snake (slimy). Priming the skin with the silicone based product is smoothing for mature skin and will leave it looking fresh and illuminated. The best way to apply primer is with a flat foundation brush, this will help clean up any residual products from the eye area. buff the primer in using a zoeva 122 small stipple brush focusing on the panel of the face.

Using Illamasqua skin base shade 02 and a flat brush apply the foundation to centre of the face and buff out with a stipple, avoiding the hairline and ensuring the cremises (creases) are completely covered/ filled

apply a touch of foundation to one side of a flat brush and pat under the eye to cover dark areas

rebuff because of inprints from fingers resting on face, use a stipple brush for this

apply Illamasqua cream based highlighter, shade aurora using a zoeva 227 brush or a very similar 217 MAC cosmetics brush. buff down the nose and over the eye lids with this

move from brow to brow ensuring you comb through soap and water to flatten, next rub disposable into foundation because when applied to the eye brows this will coat evenly and minimalize the brow

block the lips out by loading the stipple brush with a small amount of foundation, use circular motions to blend
apply more highlighting cream to the eyes and nose again. before shooting this final look ensure you buff again as cream creases under hot lighting and due to the skin being warm (melts the product)

use a smaller flat brush in comparison to previously to cover the small under eye space - use this to make the foundation meet the lash line (work from the outside to the inner)

when applying mascara it important you use a disposable wand so you don't cross contaminate products, bend the wand for a better application as you get more product from the container (front of disposable sticks out and wont cause a black dot on the inside of the eye). Tai wants the eye lashes to be bitty/ clumpy (not perfect as not after the full effect) therefor she wont use the normal flicking technique and will instead wiggle lashes to form the clump. Keep the bottom lashes bare.

load up a pointed brush with black gel liner and use pupil as a guide for symmetry (ask the model to look ahead), underneath the eye create dots in the centre (they should line up with the pupil)

Using Nyx matt lip cream build up/ layer dot work, don't be neat be random and go over the natural lip line

section the hair into a off centre parting ensuring there are 2 large pieces of hair left down at the front (fringe), with the rest of the hair starting from the crown tie this up out of the way.
with the 2 front sections spray setting spray ( away from models face ) and comb through.

bring the hair forward and manipulate it into shape using the end of a tail comb

apply fishnet material over the face and secure with Kirby grips ,
to locate the hair differently manipulate it  with the end of a tail comb through the fish net (push and pull)

finally apply final pre made piece and secure with colour coordinated Kirby grips.

Disco Theme

Disco is a genre of dance music containing elements of funk, soul, pop and salsa (lifestyle).
Disco first appeared in the early 1970s New York clubs, The most famous was studio 54. Vinyl records would be played on powerful sound systems for non stop dancing. The Us audience appealed to this were gay, African American, Latino and psychedelic communities.

Like seventies was a diverse decade for make up looks. Continuing on from the late 60s flower power trend of more natural looks. The decades new trend was super glam which consisted of a retro smoky eye, skinny brows, revolved around the glitter ball of decadent disco and into Avant grade punk.
Make up has developed so much over time, from barley there to in your face! If you closely look at the period timeline you will see that the end of the decade was as opposite as you could get.

I would describe 70s make up as: glittery, glossy and shimmery makeup, designed to be seen. In the mid-1970s, American makeup artist Way Bandy utilised the boogie-nights look of smoky eyes twinned with red lips. Donna summer was the disco queen and always looked glamorous. Other singers that inspired makeup (and hair) include Debbie harry (with those red lips), punk mistress Siouxsie Sioux, and Cher. The makeup was highly expressive, worn by men and women alike. The hard facial makeup was largely unblended and included pale skin with dramatic eyes, brows and cheeks. It was provocative, ferocious and tribal.
