Catwalk.
focusing
on; fashion, pop culture, nightlife, music, art and film. The magazine stars
celebrities on the cover so it can sell and because celebs all have a
fan base that are keen to follow up on idols. this enables the saying 'here
today, gone tomorrow', i feel this magazine would be suitable for any
young, creative students like myself (18+). Overall i think the
magazine is really stylized, bold and fun.
Using
models in the public eye pretty much guarantee the sell of the magazine so this
makes the publisher and editor happy and employed.

Below i
have provided a mixture of PAPER publications that i found inspiring, i am now
going to identify the theme and analyse the images to see what they have in
common, this will help me justify my reasons for my design and make my design
100% suitable for PAPER.
·
Many textures have been included within Figure 1 as
you can see Rihanna's outfit varies from leather, denim, cotton, fur and net.
·
The photography ranges within PAPER magazine, as
you can see there are full body shots and portrait (head and shoulders). In
figure 1 (the last image) the background is our of focus while Rhianna is
brought forward in focus
·
The models are all posed at an angle creating
shapes and in the centre
·
The location for figure 2,3,4 and 5 is location as
there is a pure and dark background, this allows the images to stand
out
·
Within figure 1,3,4 and 5 there has been a coloured
wig used
·
Tropical colours have been the theme within all the
publications
·
figure 2 shows a festival hair approach to
this year’s summer trend, as you can see jewels and accessories have been
used.
·
Beauty dish's and soft box lighting has been used
within the images
I will be applying a wig to my models hair and then
styling using rollers as they give a circular shape when neatly
applied. As you can see from the Paper publication nearly every model is
wearing a wig so i want to carry out this element without copying so i will be
changing the colour to black, i think this will work better when balancing the
outfit also. although the models natural hair would be could be coloured using
temporary coloured hair spray, it would take away the slickness and shine i
plan to achieve which would make my image less effective and it would cost more
money and take time. refer to figure 19
because i have been inspired by meatal spikes i
have decided to keep the wig straight and smooth to represent its texture.
refer to figure 22
Because i identified the colour theme in PAPER
magazine was tropical i first thought of a summer sun set so I will implicate
this by using a different coloured plain t-shirt in each of my
images. refer to figure 16
Because shapes such as circles have been used in
PAPER publications i will implicate this shape by using rounded sunglasses, i
will also use balloons as props to help assist my look. refer to figure 7
and 9
Because a spike is a similar shape to a triangle
which has 3 points, i will be using 3 rollers in the hair for continuity. My
original inspiration come from lady Gaga and the metal coke cans (refer to
figure 19)
i want my hair and makeup to be the focal point and
drag looks are technical therefore i will be carrying out these elements
throughout my shoot finally progressing to a strong final look,
i want each look to have some sort of development. To make my design fit
the theme Avant Garde i will be using additional media (spikes located
differently in each look) and spikey eyelashes, the layers will increase within
each look. refer to figure 17, 20 and 21
Because there was such a variety of materials used
within PAPER i have chosen dress my model in a black leather jacket because i
don't want my look to be overpowering and i want to create balance with the
black shoes. I will implicate gloss to represent the shine of the leather as it
has a pvc effect. refer to image 10 and 13
Because i have been inspired by the Magazine PAPER,
i thought 'paper' can be associated with recycling therefore i attended a
avant-garde recycling exhibition in York as further research. I have
decided to pre make accessories such as a necklace made from safety pins, the
colour silver will represent the metal spikes. Because safety pins are sharp
and coloured silver i will implicate this into my make up by completing a
winged graphic liner. refer to figure 23 and 18
I will be photographing portrait shots and full
body images as these are the angles as i want to capture every angle. my work is obviously going to be held in a studio as i need the equipment, i have chose this because i want a pure back ground that will make the colours appear more vibrant.
i will get my model to pose facing for ward and
angled so i will ensure the outfit fits so i don't have to use bull dog clips
or hide them. I will think about composition as i will be using a chair, The shoes will change from spiked trainers with a small wedge to
heels to show progression of height. refer to figure 14 and 6.
Balloons are used at party's and event so this will
work perfectly as i want the mood to be fun, the colour of the balloons will
reflect the tropical theme to tie the whole image together as the colour theme
is part of my continuity. refer to figure 9
spikes can be seen as punk/ grunge so i will
implicate the colour black to provide depth. I will be implicating the colour
red because if you was to set your hair under a hood dryer it becomes hot and i
want to reflect this, the spikes can be used to give warning to stay away.
refer to figure 12
I will be using soft box and a beauty dish to
capture my desired images. I will consider the accuracy of my make up because i
will be shooting up close and the light will highlight any imperfection
To further my research i decided to watch make up
tutorials on YouTube, the make up is bold, heavy but beautiful. I think drag
suits Avant Garde because its very over the top.

When designing my look I was going to change the
lip on the 4th image, i was going to apply spikes however I found that because
the spikes were metal they were too heavy and were extremely hard to stick also
I found they were only one size and you couldn't arrange them in anyway except
a row. I am glad i practiced this as i am going to stick to my design and not
overcomplicate it.
To make the shoot day run smoothly i have decided
to pre-style my wig. I have attached metal spikes to the rollers using a hot
glue gun. I have secured the rollers with Kirby grips. All that will need doing
on the day is appliance and straightening.
I am
going to be keeping the same hair style throughout as this will be time
effective and is a continuity point.

health and safety when working on a photoshoot:
· Ensure there are no trailing
wires, using hazard tape or duct tape to secure all trailing wires flat to the
floor will prevent anyone from tripping.
· ensure there is enough room for
your model to manoeuvre
· it is important
all equipment stands are positioned correctly (use all legs). Always check
that equipment is secure before using
· if changing equipment e.g. soft
box to snoot, extra care is needed because light become very hot very quickly.
· If moving to a different location
always put the protective cover back on the light, as this will prevent damage
and burns
· Never leave your model or studio
unattended
It is crucial
that a risk assessment is carried out upon the studio, click the following link

Trixie Mattel Drag Makeup
Tutorial | Marc Zapanta. (2017). [video] Available at:

Before carrying on with my planning i have decided to completely change it as i have critically analysed my planning realising I've not completed what the brief asks, i have no inspirational reference point to my story and i don't feel Asif i own it. i spoke with my tutor to help resolve this and see where i was going wrong.
I am still using the Avant Garde magazine Paper for my styling inspiration but change the story...
so i have already identified Paper magazine shoots three quarter shots, overall gritty, shots and have mood lighting. I will be shooting with Michelle from the university and we plan to use reflectors and soft box lighting to experiment with my work
for the hair on the last image i don't want to go all out because it is still unknown if everything is perfect so i wanted to implicate this.
i will be crimping the hair to texturize it, i believe this will make the hair stiff and easier to manipulate into a wacky style to suit Avant Garde also because it represents the bumpy time I've had recently.
i will be using white flowers/ petals at the end to represent faith and purity. white is a positive colour and my challenges are slowly improving.
i plan to use silver safety pins in the hair to represent the whole process of the treatment weighing our family mood down daily. Overall this would be an cheaper alternative in comparison to buying chains.
For the hair i took inspiration from Jennifer Lenord, when Jennifer was creating her avant garde hairstyle as a guest speaker i decided to take notes. I found that i did not want to copy her idea and incorporate feathers although i wanted to add kitchen cloths to represent a dirty rag
i want to show the side effects that the treatment has therefor i will use tablets for the model to pose with and i will be creating scars and scabs.
i want to use a fur texture in the final shot (look 4) because fur is expensive in comparison to rags and ripped clothing items which i will be using in look 1,2 and 3. I will also use black lace and white pearls as this can be seen as high price.
i want to incorporate props such as a chicken wire as my dad felt he was trapped and couldn't talk about his problems (he didn't want to be a burden) i want to position this in front of the camera lens and for the model to pose with her hands up like she's trying to escape.
Because my dad had a lot of side effect to the treatment he aged a lot, his skin dyed out and had yellow tones so i will be using brown shadows and cream based products to create depth
i will be using a female model because i have took inspiration from the Cinderella story but added a modern twist - this will perfectly show the rags to riches
the hair will be loose throughout the beginning of my looks containing rage however by look 4 i want this to be elegant sleek updo - i will have to work backwards as i cant achieve this once the hair is crimped. The hair up will represent the way I'm moving as things are going up / getting better considering i am going from a flat to a house. I will have to take into consideration what order i complete my looks in as i will be doing them on one day due to having a photographer and the studio booked all day, firstly i will start with design 4 because i want the hair to remain sleek and if i was to do this last i would have to plan for washing time.

My inspiration for my looks links in with my work based placement as we had a guest speaker from Look good feel better and Jennifer Leonards Avant Garde demonstration.
see the link provided below to have an insight into these sessions:
Look good feel better -

to capture the best images of my work i will be explaining my styling elements to the photographer i have organised (exactly the same as paper) and i have booked out the studio to ensure my images are 100% professional.
The aim of my look was to have continuity and to build on the make up each time so i wasn't carrying a huge kit.

Design Change

so i have already identified Paper magazine shoots three quarter shots, overall gritty, shots and have mood lighting. I will be shooting with Michelle from the university and we plan to use reflectors and soft box lighting to experiment with my work
So, for my creative image 4 page spread I have decided to
get raw and use my energy to overcome certain obstacles in my life that I am
currently facing and are challenged by. As a person, I am extremely sensitive
but like to act strong and just cope by getting on with things, this involves
not talking to people about my issues and not giving my self-time to think or
process things to a point where I don’t know how I feel. I am using this module
to find my muse as an artist and hope to express this through producing a
visual story that is personal to me…a journey that I would like to take you on.
For almost 2 years now I have been living independently, I
have a small flat that is located on the same street as my Dad due to him being
a recovering alcoholic as well as suffering depression and me being his main
carer. My dad drank heavily for 20 years and has never had the best life style
which has recently had a heart-breaking effect, he was diagnosed with cancer of
the larynx. Being present throughout the diagnosis physically hurt me and
deeply sadden me however I knew I had to be strong and find a way to cope so I
could be there for him through his long hours of upcoming treatment. My dad’s
treatment plan was to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy which really weighted
him down but he kept fighting despite no longer having any confidence. My dad
suffered lots of side effects to the treatments such as; Dryness of the skin,
Tiredness, coughing up blood, swelling of the throat, weight loss, radiotherapy
burns and bowel problems which led to him being taken to hospital where the
doctors cured my dad’s pain with drugs/ medication. After being discharged from hospital my dad began to feel better and is now looking healthy and putting on weight, He feels good and well within himself and feels positive. Also i am currently facing another challenge and this is moving from my first flat to a house...exciting but scary!
because paper magazine photography can appear gritty i have decided to use things such as chicken wire because i thought it would add to this element. I have chosen to use the white flowers in the last image because i want to represent faith and purity. White is a positive colour and so far we have had positive news regarding moving and my dads results, white represents a successful beginning, goodness which we all hope for.(Project, Bourn and Bourn, 2017)

about my look and what i will be including:
the black T shirt represents the dark time we have had and helped set the mood along with the rips.
i am going to be using eyelashes for continuity purposes because when you have caner and go through treatment you begin to loose these. i will start off natural, then get shorter up until the last image because i want this to represent health and riches therefor the make up will need to be elegant for deign 4. because paper magazine photography can appear gritty i have decided to use things such as chicken wire because i thought it would add to this element. to capture the best images of my work i will be explaining my styling elements to the photographer i have organised (exactly the same as paper) and i have booked out the studio to ensure my images are 100% professional.
The aim of my look was to have continuity and to build on the make up each time so i wasn't carrying a huge kit.
