Week 1 Models and styling for fashion photography

What is important when holding a model casting session?

When holding a model casting session, you must be specific within your needs for example ethnicity, height, clothes size, shoe size and skin tones. Each model should have a portrait image taken for reference point because this will enable the artist to decide on type of model(s) that would be appropriate in enhancing the final image. They would need to compliment the theme for example; if you were holding a winter wonderland photoshoot you may require a tall, porcelain model with blonde hair and may wish to add additional media such as icicles, glitter, blue and white tones for a colour theme etc. Or if you were to create an Avant Garde look you may want to choose a model with prominent features so these can be easily enhanced.

You must ensure you have the correct measurements for your model starting with the shoe and clothes size, your main responsibility is for the model to be comfortable and the clothes to fit once sourced. When purchasing the out fit it is always best to go slightly bigger/ silhouette rather than smaller because you can use tools such as bulldog clips and pins to make the clothing appear more fitting. If the clothing is to small you are limited to what you can do with your style although if you use tools like the bulldog clips you must think of your composition for example positioning your model at an angle so everything is hidden.

If your model is required to perform a small dance routine to capture a desired pose/ movement you would have to consider the outfit/ how restricting the clothing may be and will it effect the way they move.

What details do you need?
It is important you gather all the correct contact information so you can confirm arrangements and changes with models, contact details include; Name, Phone number and email. Not only is it important for you to have your models details but it is just as important that you exchange yours, this can be done by providing a business card.

Where can you find a model?
Aspiring models are available to collaborate with artists and photographers if it is beneficial to them. By this I mean out of respect nobody should be asked to work for free, although it can be hard finding funds. when looking for a model I would personally explain that the shoot will be TFP work (a professional final image will be copied and sent to them for their portfolio), dinner and travel expenses would also be covered.

Models can be found online at:

Models can  also be approached in person and doing this breaks the ice. if I was to approach somebody on the street I imagine the convocation to start like this... 'Hi, sorry to bother you but I am a artist looking for a model and I think you would be perfect to shoot with, is this something you are interested in?'

I have signed up to the above accounts so I can collaborate within my field easily, I can use these websites to contact models, make up artists, photographers and stylists.

Why is styling fashion important?
Styling is key within fashion as it provides a focal point/ interest to a image and ties the whole theme together. Styling can also be seen as advertisement to enhance trends and collections for example; Because they are soft you could implicate use of fabrics within your design to represent a pestle coloured collection or you could apply a graphic liner with pale themed make up so it stands out and compliments a structured/ tailored outfit. Basically styling can be done by adding accessories, props or a background (location).

Identifying and comparing editorial genres

Vogue High fashion editorial figure 1

The make up in this image is unique/edgy and enhances features giving a overall prominent, clean sharp look that is suitable for editorial fashion (especially vogue)

The hair has been styled straight and sleek with a 1950s bang which provides a square frame. The make up is technical as there is winged liner and a glam red ombre lip.
I feel this shoot was inspired by the 1950s because it carry's out similar elements such as the black and white polka dots and gloves. Accessories have been used such as a scarf and a bag therefore I think it is a fashion story. The umbrella is being used as a prop as it is not raining, the cigarette adds to the tension/ of the image.
The make up is flawless even though it is heavily applied due to the location being outside (you would have to be mindful of weather and natural lighting as it highlights any imperfection) the clothing is heavy and textured just like the make up
It is not often you will find a tattooed model on the cover or featured in a couture magazine like vogue. Vogue magazines require high fashion super models containing a clear complexion that anything can be adapted too.

                                                           I.D Alternative editorial figure 2
The make up is weird and wonderful, overall the make up literally looks painted on and cartoon character based with the dark dolly lips. Additional media has been used to balance the look and cover other parts of the body other than the face. The hair is wild, curled, textured and styled extravagant making the image bold.
The outfit reflects hearts and the hat represents a crown therefor ties together the theme queen of hearts, the mood is powerful and not about clothing
the image has been photographed in a studio with reflectors and a soft box as there are no shadows casted.

Each of these are suitable for a editorial genre because they have a edgy feel and illustrate a story/ theme visually . both have lots of creative freedom and interpretation to show what words can not communicate. Make up is the key factor in both the images and the looks are not likely to be worn everyday

Make up Genres and Suitability

classic - artificial lighting with more control for a soft base, studio shoot, non extravagant, soft lighting, simple, dewy skin, fresh face, clean, simple/not over done portrait shoot and flawless skin

magazines; composure

glamour - light reflective, striking, evening style, bold, glossy skin, sexy and contouring. these magazines are suitable for students and the working class, styles are considered striking and broke down in to wearable. trends are mostly portrayed by recognised faces.
magazines; Glam, Harper Bazaar and Cosmopolitan, purple

alternative - bold designs, colourful, inspiration for the high street, artistic, commercial, lighting focus of face/ digital, background dark, head shot, eccentric, themed , unique hair and make up
magazines; auxiliary , Lula, Id, Dazed and confused, Love, zink, paper

couture - high fashion/ highest level of fashion, tailor look, expensive, affordable for higher working class, trend setting/ ahead of trends, made to order, exclusive, elegant and sophisticated
magazines; Vogue, Vanity Fair, Wonderland, Spook and Harlow

what is a beauty story?  the focus is on the face and they don't pay much attention to what the model is wearing due to it being a head shot, usually in photo studio with artificial lighting

what is a fashion story? where the focus point is on the designers collection and the attention is the fashion not the make up as they are trying to sell. the image is usually a head to toe shot

Spring summer 2017

So today we was set the task to create a 5 page spread based on a spring / summer 2017 trend. So as soon as i went home i decided to visit my local shop and purchase a magazine that would fit the task. The magazine that stood out to me the most was Dazed and confused. This magazine lies under the alternative genre because it takes inspiration from the high street in a bright and beautiful way.
figure 1. (Dazed & Confused spring cover, 2017)

Dazed and confused typically design for: Gucci, Fendi, louis Vuitton, Miu Miu,Dior, Saint Laurent, MSGM and many more!

The target audience for this magazine is 18+, the reason i believe this is because of the price in comparison to glam, there for it is more for the working class as younger people in education strictly wont have the funds.

As you can see from all of the above images they all share at least one thing in common and that is the colour theme. Orange and yellow is this years trend as it is reflected in the background, clothing and make up. The make up within this magazine is kept fairly simple; blended and natural with pops of colour, this is because the focal point is the clothing. I know this because the images taken are produced into a fashion story's and by this i mean a full length images capturing accessories such as bags. As part of the look composition has been thought about as the models are creating sharp shapes to showcase the clothing for example; stretching leg out with one knee up and turning around. Analysing this magazine helped me generate my research and helped inspire me.

  • I like the contrast in figure 2 there for i will use orange and yellow as a transitional shade
  • figure 4 inspired me because it has a pearlescent shine, to implicate this in my design i am going to use 2- 3 different lips shades and a gloss
  • the dark brow in figure 6 inspired me as i want to create warm depth
  • the gold in figure 5 has inspired me there for i am going to use a golden highlighter
  • The smoothness in figure 4 inspires me there for i will ensure i use a primer

Make up kit:
Benefit highlighter sun beam
make up forever full coverage foundation
mac prep and prime
Illamasqua radiance veil
bobbi brown pro lip palette
Chanel bronzer
colour correction by benefit
rimmel volume shake black mascara
collection brown eyeliner
Bobbi brown rose lip liner
Bobbi brown mahogany brow powder
urban decay eye primer
urban decay full spectrum shade calavera
too face sweet peach palette shade charmed I'm sure, cobbler
too faced chocolate bar palette shade hazelnut and triple fudge

overall i am really happy with this make up look, it is not overpowering and instead looks natural.
i think it completely represents spring 2017 trends, i wanted to keep this look simple because realistically in summer you don't often see heavy applications of make up. i didn't want a matified look because the sun is brightening so i used makeup forever foundation stick and i found it worked a dream as you can see it left a perfect dewy flawless finish. to add to this i used the technique contouring and highlighting. this helped me achieve that sun kissed skin we all desire as i made sure i highlighted the highest parts of the face. One challenge i did meet was the lips, when lining the lips i noticed my model had a scar on the lip line, this caused a raise in the lip so i made the decision to slightly overdraw them.
see week 8 page 10 on my WBP blog for more about this look
