week 5 Editorial

A editorial shoot requires a large team and by this I mean many artists in order to produce a illustrative story through vision. The process is considered highly creative involving endless design development, makeup is a key fact in the fashion world. Editorial make is not usually worn everyday and used for magazine spreads and runway. When designing you must consider hair too as it is an essential to tie the image together, Additional media is usually used to further enhance the image. remember the primary aim is to tell a story and portray a mood

The three images above all show elements of editorial and actually all have one thing particularly in common, the hair. As you can see in image 1 the hair has additional media/ has gold leaf running through, in image two they have either sprayed the hair purple or are using a wig, they have implicated the colour into the make up also. Lastly figure three is very simple, I presume the hair piece was made from synthetic hair and chicken wire prior to the photoshoot as this is the focus point and will be a case of just the application on the day (which is really time effective). I know these looks are editorial because they are likely to be featured in a scope of things like a magazine and are not commonly seen everyday due to being classed as 'bold and unique'.

video 1. (WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? Editorial Makeup Artists vs Youtube Guru, and Instagram Artists?, 2017)
A make up artist has to be versatile in all areas and understand the genre of magazine they are creating a look for in order to deliver different concepts, this makes us conceptional artists and by this I don't mean the Makeup artists portrayed on Instagram, we are not one trick pony's, yes this make up is beautiful and technical however will never be seen within fashion. As a editorial artist you will be expected to collaborate with different departments such as styling and hair because together as a TEAM you can bounce off each others expertise and create something simply amazing!

I have decided to design my look based on working for Vogue, for the beginning of my research I decided to look at vogue editorial photoshoots.

f2 (Fashion Photography: Regal Punk Anja Rubik for Vogue Paris by Inez & Vinoodh, 2017)

This look was created for Paris Vogue in August 2013, The model above is Anja Rubik and her Stylist throughout this photoshoot was Emmanuelle Alt. The theme channelled was regal punk as you can see from the images provided. I will now analyse these looks to help form my design plan, my analysis will include the choices of colour, styling, composition, location and make up application.
(Guide et al., 2017)

As you can see from the images above the make up application is heavy, a graphic winged liner has been applied in figure 5 as well as a half painted face that almost looks theatrical. Half of the top and bottom lip is lined sharply and filled while the other side is kept really natural. The colours within the outfits that have been used range from black, red and green so I will consider this to be the colour theme of my look. The hair has been set curled and styled spikey which reminds me of the 80s as the texture is rough, adding to this headwear have been used to create height. The theme for this photoshoot is punk glam, I think this because the shoes are odd -one foot with a boot and metal buckle, and one heeled shoe carrying the glamour element.

Over when I look at these images and see the colour black I sense a mysterious/ rebellious mood as that occasionally is punk nature.  All of these images have been shot in a studio with the lighting a soft box, I know this because there is no harsh shadows. The models are posing forward and angular with only one head shot and the rest being full body, the clothes are clearly the focal point as the model has changed outfits keeping the hair and make up the same.

Vogue is an American Fashion and lifestyle magazine, Vogue simply began back in 1892 in the united states as a weekly newspapers. Years later we find vogue transforming to a monthly publication made up of  fashion, beauty, living and runway. Vogue has now developed to a monthly issue staring both male and female celebrity models such as; Richard Gere, Cindy Crawford, George Clooney, Kendal Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Gigi Hadid, Ashton Eaton, Penelope Cruz and many more! Vogue magazine feature's high end campaigns such as; Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Prada, Chanel
etc. (En.wikipedia.org, 2017)

Because vogue has been inspired by the 80s punk i researched an icon of the era, Farrah Fawcett therefore when designing I will use back combing techniques and use products such as hairspray and sea salt spray to interpret this. refer to figure 5

Because punk make up is heavy i want to create a strong black blown out Smokey eye matching a heavy calved out brow (theatre style) instead of a soft refused natural fashion brow. refer to figure 4

I want to create a mottle effect so i will be masking off the neck and eye area ensuring I pay attention to detail (Instead of using paint and a brush I will use Mascara and a disposable) this will allow me to control the product. refer to figure 3

I will be styling my model in a popular modern out fit; black oversized bomber jacket, khaki green dress with black buckled ankle boots. The reason I have chosen black boots is because the colour can be seen as elegant as well as mysterious which fits the glam punk theme perfectly. To compliment the green dress i plan on using the same shade of green on the mobile lid, the colour brown and black will be used as a transitional shade to give my image depth and make it stand out. refer to my design chart below.

composition - I want my model to pose sat up/forward with feet out, I also want to try capture a sideshot there for I will I will ask my model to kneel sideways or sit her on a stool sideways. refer to figure 2 vogue images

I don't want my look to be overpowering there for i am going to keep the lip natural and just lined instead of filled as you can see on my design chart

I will be shooting my look in the studio which has been booked today ready for next week, I plan on my final imagine being convered to black and white as I want to show a contrast in colour and I thought this would add to my grunge effect. I have chose a studio for my location because i would like to use a soft box for lighting.

I will be using studded gloves as an accessory, this gives my look that punk and glam look as diamonds are glamour's and leather is a common material punks to wear (it adds to there reckless look)

for a prop i will be bending chicken wire to form a circle shape and attach square pieces of green material ( so it is dangling from the chicken wire).

Make up Kit list;
L'Oréal Paris miss baby roll mascara, black and disposables eye wands
Illamasqua skin base foundation
Illamasqua brow gel
Urban decay smoky shade black market, combust, thirteen
too faced chocolate bar shade hazel nut
bare minerals prime time
Miss beauty London black eye pencil
Bobbi brown rose lip liner
Bobbi brown pro lip palette shade pale mauve
Benefit colour correction
Bobbi brown repair serum

Hair kit:
Tail comb
paddle brush
gown
hairspray
sea salt spray
curlers

Overall i am really pleased with my final look as i think i have achieved the punk glam look i was going for, the black and white photography really compliments the grunge make up look as it shows contrast between light and dark shades around the eye and neck area. I like how the depth of the eye make up is really visible, to achieve this i applied a pale concealer over the lid before application of pigment as the powder will set the cream based product. To further enhance my make up look i could of blocked out the eyebrows and totally redrawn and relocated them or i could of found away to enhance the lip for example lip art. I think the dress worn represents modern but doesn't meet vogues expectations of glamorous therefor next time to improve i will look at collaborating with a fashion student. I planned to create a 80s Farrah Fawcett hair style with the use of back combing techniques, curlers, hair spray and sea salt spray which i found gave the hair a rough texture that i aimed to achieve, although over time the curls did drop (as i did them first) so next time i will prep the hair in pin curls after curling and then style once the make up is done. Also you can see on the right image the hair doesn't have much height, at this point i should have stepped in to touch it up because this is a key element of Farrah Fawcett's hair. I could of been more creative with the hair, especially when basing it around height as i could of pre made a hair piece or incorporated padding. If i was to recreate this look again i may reconsider may hair kit list as i think crimpers would have worked better than curlers. I planned to use studded gloves as a prop however these were too tight for the models hands (refer to behind the scene images), i then luckily found some green material in my locker from another photoshoot which i think works so much better with the look, it gives it a feminine, glam, sexy feel.
