Week 7 cat walk practical

figure 1. (Mui Mui A/W, 2017), figure 2. (Mui Mui logo, 2017)

So firstly i was inspired by Vogue Autum/ winter 2017 Mui Mui collection. What drew me to this collection first of all was the colour, everything is kept very simple making the colour stand out. many textures have been used from fur, cotton to sequins. I want to create four make up looks that fully represent this collection, because overall the make up is simple i am going to carry through 'less is more' element.

Analysis of collection and how I can implicate it into my design:
The collection has a lot of soft textures e.g. fur, I can ensure the make up is really blended. because fur is a fluffy texture i will implicate this into by design by creating a fashion brow
The collection consists of pops of colour and reminds me of the 60/70s era, there for this will determine the shades and tones i use
there is a pvc jacket in one of the images, I could use clear lip gloss to reflect this
lots of head wear so I could pile the hair up high or keep it sleek and pulled back
classic theme going on (contrast)
accessories such as a diamond necklace has been used, I could use gems
sunglasses have been used which I could use as a prop
there is a lot of length within the clothing therefor for my 4 looks I will use eyelashes on lips, this is going to be my continuity throughout my 4 looks

Overall i am not happy with this look i created , i know cat walk make up can be kept really natural but i wanted to achieve a burnt out orange and not a wash colour therefor if i could do this again i would use a concealer as a base to make the colour pop, this would help withstand cat walk lights too. My lip would have been 100% perfected if i had used a liner to create sharpness (this is a focal point with catwalk make up). Because i am using lashes on the lips (for continuity purposes) this made my look suitable for catwalk as all of the designs represent the collection i have been inspired by. To master this lip look i feel i should have layered the lashes on top of each other so they were thicker and fuller because if i had done this you wouldn't be able to see through them, it also would of hidden the band better. I think i have achieved a suitable skin base for catwalk because it looks natural and even within tone.

Look 2

Make up kit list:

Kirby grips

prop:
sunglasses with feathers (see step by step below)

tools you will need to glam up your own sunglasses:
Glue gun
Gems (silver and green)
feathers
old sun glasses

step by step:
step 1. begin by heating the hot glue gun
step 2. with the glue gun create a small line in the centre of the glasses and quickly press the silver gems on before it dry's
step 3. above the row you have created repeat step 2 until the centre is filled (like a stripe)
step 4. around the centre stripe apply glue and use green gems to decorate
step 5. turn the glasses over (inside). Apply glue and randomly place feathers near the edge so they spike up

Overall i prefer look 2 in comparison to look 1 as the colours are more vibrant. Cat walk make up has got to be seen from a distance so i took Look 1 evaluation into consideration. This look is a lot stronger than my first design because i have made use of accessories such as the sunglasses although i don't feel it goes with the autumn winter trend, so i decided to add warm winter textures, feathers to act as fur also Because the Mui Mui style is classic i chose to add gems. I could have used additional media with in the hair and incorporated pom poms a different way, if i could redo this i would like to pile the hair up high and pay attention to detail such as the lips.

week 5 Editorial

A editorial shoot requires a large team and by this I mean many artists in order to produce a illustrative story through vision. The process is considered highly creative involving endless design development, makeup is a key fact in the fashion world. Editorial make is not usually worn everyday and used for magazine spreads and runway. When designing you must consider hair too as it is an essential to tie the image together, Additional media is usually used to further enhance the image. remember the primary aim is to tell a story and portray a mood

(SHEEBA, 2017)

figure 1 (Editorial makeup, 2017)

The three images above all show elements of editorial and actually all have one thing particularly in common, the hair. As you can see in image 1 the hair has additional media/ has gold leaf running through, in image two they have either sprayed the hair purple or are using a wig, they have implicated the colour into the make up also. Lastly figure three is very simple, I presume the hair piece was made from synthetic hair and chicken wire prior to the photoshoot as this is the focus point and will be a case of just the application on the day (which is really time effective). I know these looks are editorial because they are likely to be featured in a scope of things like a magazine and are not commonly seen everyday due to being classed as 'bold and unique'.

video 1. (WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? Editorial Makeup Artists vs Youtube Guru, and Instagram Artists?, 2017)
A make up artist has to be versatile in all areas and understand the genre of magazine they are creating a look for in order to deliver different concepts, this makes us conceptional artists and by this I don't mean the Makeup artists portrayed on Instagram, we are not one trick pony's, yes this make up is beautiful and technical however will never be seen within fashion. As a editorial artist you will be expected to collaborate with different departments such as styling and hair because together as a TEAM you can bounce off each others expertise and create something simply amazing!

I have decided to design my look based on working for Vogue, for the beginning of my research I decided to look at vogue editorial photoshoots.

f2 (Fashion Photography: Regal Punk Anja Rubik for Vogue Paris by Inez & Vinoodh, 2017)

This look was created for Paris Vogue in August 2013, The model above is Anja Rubik and her Stylist throughout this photoshoot was Emmanuelle Alt. The theme channelled was regal punk as you can see from the images provided. I will now analyse these looks to help form my design plan, my analysis will include the choices of colour, styling, composition, location and make up application.
(Guide et al., 2017)

As you can see from the images above the make up application is heavy, a graphic winged liner has been applied in figure 5 as well as a half painted face that almost looks theatrical. Half of the top and bottom lip is lined sharply and filled while the other side is kept really natural. The colours within the outfits that have been used range from black, red and green so I will consider this to be the colour theme of my look. The hair has been set curled and styled spikey which reminds me of the 80s as the texture is rough, adding to this headwear have been used to create height. The theme for this photoshoot is punk glam, I think this because the shoes are odd -one foot with a boot and metal buckle, and one heeled shoe carrying the glamour element.

Over when I look at these images and see the colour black I sense a mysterious/ rebellious mood as that occasionally is punk nature.  All of these images have been shot in a studio with the lighting a soft box, I know this because there is no harsh shadows. The models are posing forward and angular with only one head shot and the rest being full body, the clothes are clearly the focal point as the model has changed outfits keeping the hair and make up the same.

Vogue is an American Fashion and lifestyle magazine, Vogue simply began back in 1892 in the united states as a weekly newspapers. Years later we find vogue transforming to a monthly publication made up of  fashion, beauty, living and runway. Vogue has now developed to a monthly issue staring both male and female celebrity models such as; Richard Gere, Cindy Crawford, George Clooney, Kendal Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Gigi Hadid, Ashton Eaton, Penelope Cruz and many more! Vogue magazine feature's high end campaigns such as; Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, Prada, Chanel
etc. (En.wikipedia.org, 2017)

Video 1. http://www.vogue.co.uk/?international (British Vogue, 2017)
Here is a link to vogues website, here you will find fashion, catwalk, daily updates, beauty, videos, arts and life style.

Because vogue has been inspired by the 80s punk i researched an icon of the era, Farrah Fawcett therefore when designing I will use back combing techniques and use products such as hairspray and sea salt spray to interpret this. refer to figure 5

Because punk make up is heavy i want to create a strong black blown out Smokey eye matching a heavy calved out brow (theatre style) instead of a soft refused natural fashion brow. refer to figure 4

I want to create a mottle effect so i will be masking off the neck and eye area ensuring I pay attention to detail (Instead of using paint and a brush I will use Mascara and a disposable) this will allow me to control the product. refer to figure 3

I will be styling my model in a popular modern out fit; black oversized bomber jacket, khaki green dress with black buckled ankle boots. The reason I have chosen black boots is because the colour can be seen as elegant as well as mysterious which fits the glam punk theme perfectly. To compliment the green dress i plan on using the same shade of green on the mobile lid, the colour brown and black will be used as a transitional shade to give my image depth and make it stand out. refer to my design chart below.

composition - I want my model to pose sat up/forward with feet out, I also want to try capture a sideshot there for I will I will ask my model to kneel sideways or sit her on a stool sideways. refer to figure 2 vogue images

I don't want my look to be overpowering there for i am going to keep the lip natural and just lined instead of filled as you can see on my design chart

I will be shooting my look in the studio which has been booked today ready for next week, I plan on my final imagine being convered to black and white as I want to show a contrast in colour and I thought this would add to my grunge effect. I have chose a studio for my location because i would like to use a soft box for lighting.

I will be using studded gloves as an accessory, this gives my look that punk and glam look as diamonds are glamour's and leather is a common material punks to wear (it adds to there reckless look)

for a prop i will be bending chicken wire to form a circle shape and attach square pieces of green material ( so it is dangling from the chicken wire).

Make up Kit list;
L'Oréal Paris miss baby roll mascara, black and disposables eye wands
Illamasqua skin base foundation
Illamasqua brow gel
Urban decay smoky shade black market, combust, thirteen
too faced chocolate bar shade hazel nut
bare minerals prime time
Miss beauty London black eye pencil
Bobbi brown rose lip liner
Bobbi brown pro lip palette shade pale mauve
Benefit colour correction
Bobbi brown repair serum

Hair kit:
Tail comb
paddle brush
gown
hairspray
sea salt spray
curlers

Overall i am really pleased with my final look as i think i have achieved the punk glam look i was going for, the black and white photography really compliments the grunge make up look as it shows contrast between light and dark shades around the eye and neck area. I like how the depth of the eye make up is really visible, to achieve this i applied a pale concealer over the lid before application of pigment as the powder will set the cream based product. To further enhance my make up look i could of blocked out the eyebrows and totally redrawn and relocated them or i could of found away to enhance the lip for example lip art. I think the dress worn represents modern but doesn't meet vogues expectations of glamorous therefor next time to improve i will look at collaborating with a fashion student. I planned to create a 80s Farrah Fawcett hair style with the use of back combing techniques, curlers, hair spray and sea salt spray which i found gave the hair a rough texture that i aimed to achieve, although over time the curls did drop (as i did them first) so next time i will prep the hair in pin curls after curling and then style once the make up is done. Also you can see on the right image the hair doesn't have much height, at this point i should have stepped in to touch it up because this is a key element of Farrah Fawcett's hair. I could of been more creative with the hair, especially when basing it around height as i could of pre made a hair piece or incorporated padding. If i was to recreate this look again i may reconsider may hair kit list as i think crimpers would have worked better than curlers. I planned to use studded gloves as a prop however these were too tight for the models hands (refer to behind the scene images), i then luckily found some green material in my locker from another photoshoot which i think works so much better with the look, it gives it a feminine, glam, sexy feel.

week 9 catalogue

Catalogue
Most brands consider Online shopping services to be a form of catalogue as it shares the same principles as a paperback magazine (even though not necessarily tangible on paper). When working for catalogue you are expected to complete not only the makeup application but the hair too! The daily working hours can be a minimum of 16hours long and being a MUA is intense because your involved in every step; analysing images, touching up and photography. Time is money in this industry and you will be expected to work in a fast pace environment as models need to be ready ASAP therefore you would start with a natural look and build up on this gradually, by this I mean not removing any products but adding ensuring there is still a natural finish – Make up needs to suit the look not detract it from the outfit and don’t overpower the collection genre e.g tailor down trends and keep within the restraints of catalogue. You would usually be assigned a brief with certain looks you must create, if you are assigned a brief this means you can; test shot, product review, design, develop and evaluate in advance to ensure a successful outcome (work smarter not harder). Finally, and most importantly you must plan to ensure you can work efficiently towards your process, this will give you the opportunity to overcome any potential issues and take away any pressure/ make the day run smoother.  Below I have listed a few fashion and beauty catalogues which I will now talk about in detail…
Asos – The makeup application on models is usually kept classic and it can be translated to any age because the makeup is neutral and so Is the hair.
Freemans – This is a British clothing catalogue that has been around for 25+ years, they cover every age and style (The models range from young to mature)
Avon – they purely sell beauty products unlike most.

Look 1 Natural Step by step
Step 1) identify the Models skin type: Mature, Oily/ combination – it is important to ask questions/ talk to your model and find out their skin type. Doing this will give you an idea of what products will suit them and the brief for example, you have been asked to create a beach look that will be photographed and your model has dry skin you would use a primer with hydrating qualities, if really dry use a cream moisturiser beforehand. It really does pay off prepping your models skin
Step 2) Cleanse, tone and moisturise
Step 3) prime the models skin with Illamasqua matt veil and a flat brush

Step 4) Because the foundation was thick Anna mixed it with the primer to thin it out and make lighter. Anna then used a flat foundation brush and small strokes to apply the base.
Step 5) Anna is now using a clean buffing brush in circular motions, concentrating on the hairline so it doesn’t look patchy and orange when photographed.
Step 6) Illamasqua skin base lift concealer works a dream when working towards an even skin tone, when applying this focus on blemishes and creases e.g the undereye because when dark areas are captured on camera it can be exaggerated. When working on catalogue touch ups are required throughout and this might consist of re buffing the cream product to save product build up (caused by muscle movement), remember less Is more! Reflective concealers are also great to use on photoshoots

Step 7) powder the T-zone depending on your models skin type. The look Anna designed is going to be dewy therefor powder will not be needed as it will do the opposite by mattifying the skin
Step 8) The brows are going to be kept natural and not heavily over drawn or calved out. Anna will be following the natural brow shape lightly with a powder and angled brush. To make the brows soft and refused brush the product up through the brow. Run brow gel through the brow on a disposable to manipulate and hold the hairs in place (the desired direction)
Step 9) using a rounded fluffy eye shadow brush and a Illamasqua muted brown matt eyeshadow, apply this to the entire lid giving it a wash of colour
Step 10) apply a darker shade of brown to the crease of the eye using contour techniques to give the illusion of a shadow/ definition. Don’t apply a dramatic brown try and keep within skin tones because you’re creating an illusion.
Step 11) Use a small detailer brush and the same brown eye shadow you put into the crease and repeat underneath the eye, ensure you use a tissue as a protector to catch the fallout. Apply a brown liner to the lash line to tie the whole eye makeup look together
Step 12) Apply black mascara to the lashes to lengthen them, roll the wand through the lash ensuring you reach right up to the lash line.
Step 13) Using small amounts of product in circular motions buff the matt bronzer into the skin. Once the model is under studio lights you can touch up the make up or add powder throughout. studio lights are extremely hot and models tend to get warm sweat under them, obviously, this will affect the make up as it becomes more movable so to prevent it smudging a translucent powder would be applied to absorb any shine and lock in the layers. To get a close of your final make up application through a third eye ask the photographer to test shot you work so you can solve problems beforehand e.g. redness or a build-up of product around the nose.
Step 14) Apply a lip liner to the corner of the top lip working in towards the cupids bow and repeat on the other side, once this is done take your time mapping out the cupids bow / joint each side as you want accuracy (use mirror to help and don’t work from one side). Rather than getting your model to open his/her mouth like at the dentist it is best to apply slight pressure above the lip to bring the lip line out.
Step 15) Finally fill the lips in with a lip stick that is colour coordinated to the liner. When doing this use tissue or a powder puff around your fingers to prevent your warm fingers interfering with the makeup (removing it/ smudging it) also it helps to support your models chin because you can lift the chin so you can work from a better angle. Now repeat this step on the bottom lip, once this is done use correction techniques to perfect symmetry and gain a sharp edge. (cotton bud and circular rotation)

What would I have done with the models hair?
Because the model being used for this demo has natural curly hair I would have kept it down, brushed it through and applied serum to the ends of the hair to eliminate any fly aways, this way it reflects the theme ‘natural’
What would I have done differently
·         Personally, I would have added a darker brown eyeshadow as I think this would withstand light better.
·         Because the theme was dewy I wouldn’t have used a powder to contour I would have used a cream based product because I personally think this would suit the look and meet the theme better as cream has a dewy consistency.
Brush tip
Don’t ever apply a foundation product using a stipple brush because you will get lines within your base so I tend to apply with a flat brush and buff into the skin with a stipple. A flat brush is tightly packed therefore you won’t lose as much product however if you use the stipple brush you will find the product will be wasted as it will clog into the hairs half way down.

Make up tip
·         If you have a model with hooded eyes you would ask them to look straight ahead so you can see where the makeup application will sit and how it will look, doing this gives you a guide. If you ask your model to close their eyes you will not be able to realistically see the location of product. (eyeshadow)
·         The key to a good make up look is skin preparation and blending
·         To warm up lip liner, squiggle it on the back of your hand
·         Start neutral and build to progress
I will give a detailed step by step on how to develop this look from natural to a beach theme using only three products…here it goes!
Look 2
Step 1) Apply bronzer to give a sun kissed skin effect and not a contour, there is a difference. To achieve sun kissed skin you must apply bronzer to all the high points of the face for example the edges of the forehead, cheekbones and bridge of the nose
Step 2) Anna is now using a tissue as a barrier for her fingers against the skin because this will protect the makeup from moving out of place. Now using a rounded eyeshadow brush and a copper eyeshadow add this to the crease to create a warm transitional shade
Step 3) use a powder highlighter to create a subtle glow, apply to areas such as the highest part of the cheekbones, forehead and chin
What would I have done with the models hair?
Usually I would apply sea salt spray to achieve a beach look however this makes the hair go hard, if I was to brush the hair it will go frizzy and non-will not suit the next look which is glamorous. There for I would wet the hair and set the hair in plats leaving it to dry naturally.
What would I have done differently?
·         I would have added freckles because they are in trend and the sun brings these out so it would help determine the look easily
·         I would have added blusher as well as bronzer
·         I would have added white eye liner to make the eyes appear wider
I will give a detailed step by step on how to develop this look from beach theme to glam using only three products…
Look 3
Step 1) Apply a dark brown eye shadow to the edge of the eye and blend out and up slightly into the crease. Matt colours push back and lighter colours come forward, to make the eyes appear bigger we must contour the eye with warm to dark matt products because the light shimmer pigment will pull forward instead when caught by light. Apple black neatly to the centre of the crease to give some the eye depth, use a clean eye blending brush to smudge this giving a smoky effect.
Step 2) Apply a gel liner to the upper lash line to give the illusion of a fuller and thicker lash (No wing). Using a Zoeva 310 spot liner brush and little movements press the product into the lash line, lift the lid at the brow bone to get a in all awkward areas. smoke black eyeshadow over the gel liner so this will set the product, soften it and stop it transferring

Step 3) On the lower lash line apply the same dark brown that was applied to the crease, ensure you protect the under eye with tissue as you already have a base and it will protect it from unwanted fallout.
What would I have done differently?
·         I would have applied a false lash because I think the eye makeup looks uncompleted without them
·         I would have applied a red lip stick because dark colours make the lip shrink
·         I would have applied a gloss
What would I have done with the models hair?
I would have set the hair in rollers and teased the curls so they were big or create an elegant up do.
Practical task
So, before our practical task we had to divide half of the class into models and half into makeup artists we then had to set up our kits at the counter and stand on opposite sides of the room. First, I was a model so myself and other Models were then delivered two pieces of paper noting the theme, focus point and location e.g. skin, studio and Lingerie. Our job was to guide the artist to picking suitable products ensuring they only use three. Once the look had been completed feedback was given and all artists moved up to the left enabling us to work on different face shapes and skin types
Look 1. Products used and reasons why
sports wear is all about dewy skin. i used Illamasqua skin base because it gives a full coverage and is silicone based. i used a powder highlighter to achieve a luminous glow and from the same pallet i used the bronzing powder to contour subtley.
Look 2.
Look 3.
with this look i think a delicate winged liner would have matched the theme because i see formal ware as smart/ casual daily work wear and i would expect to see a lady who works in an office with this type of make of make up. Natural and sophisticated overall was my aim and i think i have achieved this although there is still room left for improvement as i have highlighted what i could have done better or what i will do next time if i choose to recreate this look.

4 Portfolio images

As part of my final submission i am required to produce 4 final portfolio images based around one of the following themes:

Avant Garde

Editorial

Catalogue

Catwalk.

Once the theme is chosen you must research; the magazine you are designing for, establish the trend, who the target audience is, who do they design for, what type of models do they use, lighting, composition

The theme i have chosen to base my look around is Avant Garde. I absolutely love Avant Garde work because it has no limitation what so ever and your creativity can really be expressed through make up, hair and styling. I will be creating my look based on working for Paper magazine, Firstly my research began by analysing recent spreads / publications.

I then found that PAPER is a New York-city independent magazine that was founded in 1984

focusing on; fashion, pop culture, nightlife, music, art and film. The magazine stars celebrities on the cover so it can sell and because celebs all have a fan base that are keen to follow up on idols. this enables the saying 'here today, gone tomorrow', i feel this magazine would be suitable for any young, creative students like myself (18+). Overall i think the magazine is really stylized, bold and fun.

past models include: Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Prince, Katy Perry, Kylie Jenner, Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Lopez.

Using models in the public eye pretty much guarantee the sell of the magazine so this makes the publisher and editor happy and employed.
(En.wikipedia.org, 2017)

http://www.papermag.com/fashion/ Here is a online link to PAPER magazine website.
(PAPERMAG, 2017)

Below i have provided a mixture of PAPER publications that i found inspiring, i am now going to identify the theme and analyse the images to see what they have in common, this will help me justify my reasons for my design and make my design 100% suitable for PAPER.

·         Many textures have been included within Figure 1 as you can see Rihanna's outfit varies from leather, denim, cotton, fur and net.
·         The photography ranges within PAPER magazine, as you can see there are full body shots and portrait (head and shoulders). In figure 1 (the last image) the background is our of focus while Rhianna is brought forward in focus
·         The models are all posed at an angle creating shapes and in the centre
·         The location for figure 2,3,4 and 5 is location as there is a pure and dark background, this allows the images to stand out
·         Within figure 1,3,4 and 5 there has been a coloured wig used
·         Tropical colours have been the theme within all the publications
·         figure 2 shows a festival hair approach to this year’s summer trend, as you can see jewels and accessories have been used.
·         Beauty dish's and soft box lighting has been used within the images

I will be applying a wig to my models hair and then styling using rollers as they give a circular shape when neatly applied. As you can see from the Paper publication nearly every model is wearing a wig so i want to carry out this element without copying so i will be changing the colour to black, i think this will work better when balancing the outfit also. although the models natural hair would be could be coloured using temporary coloured hair spray, it would take away the slickness and shine i plan to achieve which would make my image less effective and it would cost more money and take time. refer to figure 19

because i have been inspired by meatal spikes i have decided to keep the wig straight and smooth to represent its texture. refer to figure 22

Because i identified the colour theme in PAPER magazine was tropical i first thought of a summer sun set so I will implicate this by using a different coloured plain t-shirt in each of my images. refer to figure 16

Because shapes such as circles have been used in PAPER publications i will implicate this shape by using rounded sunglasses, i will also use balloons as props to help assist my look. refer to figure 7 and 9

Because a spike is a similar shape to a triangle which has 3 points, i will be using 3 rollers in the hair for continuity. My original inspiration come from lady Gaga and the metal coke cans (refer to figure 19)

i want my hair and makeup to be the focal point and drag looks are technical therefore i will be carrying out these elements throughout my shoot finally progressing to a strong final look, i want each look to have some sort of development. To make my design fit the theme Avant Garde i will be using additional media (spikes located differently in each look) and spikey eyelashes, the layers will increase within each look. refer to figure 17, 20 and 21

Because there was such a variety of materials used within PAPER i have chosen dress my model in a black leather jacket because i don't want my look to be overpowering and i want to create balance with the black shoes. I will implicate gloss to represent the shine of the leather as it has a pvc effect. refer to image 10 and 13

Because i have been inspired by the Magazine PAPER, i thought 'paper' can be associated with recycling therefore i attended a avant-garde recycling exhibition in York as further research. I have decided to pre make accessories such as a necklace made from safety pins, the colour silver will represent the metal spikes. Because safety pins are sharp and coloured silver i will implicate this into my make up by completing a winged graphic liner. refer to figure 23 and 18

I will be photographing portrait shots and full body images as these are the angles as i want to capture every angle. my work is obviously going to be held in a studio as i need the equipment, i have chose this because i want a pure back ground that will make the colours appear more vibrant.

i will get my model to pose facing for ward and angled so i will ensure the outfit fits so i don't have to use bull dog clips or hide them. I will think about composition as i will be using a chair, The shoes will change from spiked trainers with a small wedge to heels to show progression of height. refer to figure 14 and 6.

Balloons are used at party's and event so this will work perfectly as i want the mood to be fun, the colour of the balloons will reflect the tropical theme to tie the whole image together as the colour theme is part of my continuity. refer to figure 9

spikes can be seen as punk/ grunge so i will implicate the colour black to provide depth. I will be implicating the colour red because if you was to set your hair under a hood dryer it becomes hot and i want to reflect this, the spikes can be used to give warning to stay away. refer to figure 12

I will be using soft box and a beauty dish to capture my desired images. I will consider the accuracy of my make up because i will be shooting up close and the light will highlight any imperfection

To further my research i decided to watch make up tutorials on YouTube, the make up is bold, heavy but beautiful. I think drag suits Avant Garde because its very over the top.

When designing my look I was going to change the lip on the 4th image, i was going to apply spikes however I found that because the spikes were metal they were too heavy and were extremely hard to stick also I found they were only one size and you couldn't arrange them in anyway except a row. I am glad i practiced this as i am going to stick to my design and not overcomplicate it.

To make the shoot day run smoothly i have decided to pre-style my wig. I have attached metal spikes to the rollers using a hot glue gun. I have secured the rollers with Kirby grips. All that will need doing on the day is appliance and straightening.
I am going to be keeping the same hair style throughout as this will be time effective and is a continuity point.

Wig and cap
Kirby grips
Hairspray
Hair serum
Rollers

health and safety when working on a photoshoot:
· Ensure there are no trailing wires, using hazard tape or duct tape to secure all trailing wires flat to the floor will prevent anyone from tripping.
· ensure there is enough room for your model to manoeuvre
· it is important all equipment stands are positioned correctly (use all legs). Always check that equipment is secure before using
· if changing equipment e.g. soft box to snoot, extra care is needed because light become very hot very quickly.
· If moving to a different location always put the protective cover back on the light, as this will prevent damage and burns
· Never leave your model or studio unattended
It is crucial that a risk assessment is carried out upon the studio, click the following link to see an example of health and safety risk assessment http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/etis18.pdf

Design Change

Before carrying on with my planning i have decided to completely change it as i have critically analysed my planning realising I've not completed what the brief asks, i have no inspirational reference point to my story and i don't feel Asif i own it. i spoke with my tutor to help resolve this and see where i was going wrong.

I am still using the Avant Garde magazine Paper for my styling inspiration but change the story...
so i have already identified Paper magazine shoots three quarter shots, overall gritty, shots and have mood lighting. I will be shooting with Michelle from the university and we plan to use reflectors and soft box lighting to experiment with my work

So, for my creative image 4 page spread I have decided to get raw and use my energy to overcome certain obstacles in my life that I am currently facing and are challenged by. As a person, I am extremely sensitive but like to act strong and just cope by getting on with things, this involves not talking to people about my issues and not giving my self-time to think or process things to a point where I don’t know how I feel. I am using this module to find my muse as an artist and hope to express this through producing a visual story that is personal to me…a journey that I would like to take you on.
For almost 2 years now I have been living independently, I have a small flat that is located on the same street as my Dad due to him being a recovering alcoholic as well as suffering depression and me being his main carer. My dad drank heavily for 20 years and has never had the best life style which has recently had a heart-breaking effect, he was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx. Being present throughout the diagnosis physically hurt me and deeply sadden me however I knew I had to be strong and find a way to cope so I could be there for him through his long hours of upcoming treatment. My dad’s treatment plan was to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy which really weighted him down but he kept fighting despite no longer having any confidence. My dad suffered lots of side effects to the treatments such as; Dryness of the skin, Tiredness, coughing up blood, swelling of the throat, weight loss, radiotherapy burns and bowel problems which led to him being taken to hospital where the doctors cured my dad’s pain with drugs/ medication. After being discharged from hospital my dad began to feel better and is now looking healthy and putting on weight, He feels good and well within himself and feels positive. Also i am currently facing another challenge and this is moving from my first flat to a house...exciting but scary!

because paper magazine photography can appear gritty i have decided to use things such as chicken wire because i thought it would add to this element. I have chosen to use the white flowers in the last image because i want to represent faith and purity. White is a positive colour and so far we have had positive news regarding moving and my dads results, white represents a successful beginning, goodness which we all hope for.(Project, Bourn and Bourn, 2017)

video 1.
(Ben Nye's Ultimate Old Age Effect, 2017)
about my look and what i will be including:
the black T shirt represents the dark time we have had and helped set the mood along with the rips.
i am going to be using eyelashes for continuity purposes because when you have caner and go through treatment you begin to loose these. i will start off natural, then get shorter up until the last image because i want this to represent health and riches therefor the make up will need to be elegant for deign 4.

for the hair on the last image i don't want to go all out because it is still unknown if everything is perfect so i wanted to implicate this.

i will be crimping the hair to texturize it, i believe this will make the hair stiff and easier to manipulate into a wacky style to suit Avant Garde also because it represents the bumpy time I've had recently.

i will be using white flowers/ petals at the end to represent faith and purity. white is a positive colour and my challenges are slowly improving.

i plan to use silver safety pins in the hair to represent the whole process of the treatment weighing our family mood down daily. Overall this would be an cheaper alternative in comparison to buying chains.

For the hair i took inspiration from Jennifer Lenord, when Jennifer was creating her avant garde hairstyle as a guest speaker i decided to take notes. I found that i did not want to copy her idea and incorporate feathers although i wanted to add kitchen cloths to represent a dirty rag

i want to show the side effects that the treatment has therefor i will use tablets for the model to pose with and i will be creating scars and scabs.

i want to use a fur texture in the final shot (look 4) because fur is expensive in comparison to rags and ripped clothing items which i will be using in look 1,2 and 3. I will also use black lace and white pearls as this can be seen as high price.

i want to incorporate props such as a chicken wire as my dad felt he was trapped and couldn't talk about his problems (he didn't want to be a burden) i want to position this in front of the camera lens and for the model to pose with her hands up like she's trying to escape.

Because my dad had a lot of side effect to the treatment he aged a lot, his skin dyed out and had yellow tones so i will be using brown shadows and cream based products to create depth

i will be using a female model because i have took inspiration from the Cinderella story but added a modern twist - this will perfectly show the rags to riches

the hair will be loose throughout the beginning of my looks containing rage however by look 4 i want this to be elegant sleek updo - i will have to work backwards as i cant achieve this once the hair is crimped. The hair up will represent the way I'm moving as things are going up / getting better considering i am going from a flat to a house. I will have to take into consideration what order i complete my looks in as i will be doing them on one day due to having a photographer and the studio booked all day, firstly i will start with design 4 because i want the hair to remain sleek and if i was to do this last i would have to plan for washing time.

Look good feel better -

Jennifer -

to capture the best images of my work i will be explaining my styling elements to the photographer i have organised (exactly the same as paper) and i have booked out the studio to ensure my images are 100% professional.

The aim of my look was to have continuity and to build on the make up each time so i wasn't carrying a huge kit.
